Artificial Grass at a Hangzhou-based middle school was Highly Poisonous

Many students of a Hangzhou-based middle school were recently off sick. The artificial grass and synthetic material that was used for running tracks at the school was seen as the culprit. A laboratory found out that the grass samples were highly toxic. Emitting benzene almost 14 times above the safety limit. The 2nd grass sample was above the limit by about 27%.

Artificial GrassAccording to a report conducted by South Metropolis, the students at Hangzhou Foreign School located at Zhejiang region suffered diseases. Including delayed menstruation, coughs and nosebleeds since the end of May. According to a statement on the school’s website, after their students participated in their respective sports classes, some of them felt bumpy, and the school administrators completely believe that it is due to the rubber material that was used for running tracks. So, what the school did is to send samples of the artificial grass and tracks to a testing institute.

Test Results For The Artificial Grass

According to the school, the rubber material was safe; however the artificial grass has the ability to emit toxic substances. 2 of the 7 artificial grass testers were having benzene concentrations that are above the standards. One of the artificial grass sample measures 63.8 mg/kg and that is about 27% over the national safety maximum of 50 mg/kg. The 2nd material has benzene emissions at a whopping 733.8 mg/kg.

The Previous tests shown in October were finished. It simply means that the materials utilized on the surface were qualified. The school added that the high temperature is the cause of the sudden of the toxic ingredients. The school dismissed all the students for an early summer vacation, though half of them will return to school for 3 days of final exams.
